Some things need space to be understood, my portfolio is one of them. So come back on a laptop, coffee in hand, this one deserves to be seen as planned.

I promise it's worth it.

Design Principles for B2B Scaling

  1. Aggregate First, Details Second

Show fleet-level summary before individual cars

  1. Enable Batch Operations

Any action you can do once, you should be able to do in bulk

  1. User should know fleet status in <10 seconds

Users shouldn't need to visit each vehicle to find problems

Tested with 5 fleet managers

User testing revealed that showing a discount badge upfront was important for visibility and decision-making, even before users entered the details screen.

Key learnings

  1. Retail and Business have fundamentally different mental model

In retail products, you think in terms of individual actionsIn B2B products, you must think in terms of batch operations

  1. Business clients are more sensitive to changes in their environment

Because they use the product as a working tool to manage their operations

  1. Efficiency is key for Business

Finance teams complete tasks, they don't explore. Time = money.

Key difference

Retail:

1-2 cars, owner manages their own vehicle

Business:

5-50+ cars, fleet manager oversees all vehicles for the company

The problem:

Early research showed that businesses were trying to use the retail app for fleet management which was not suitable for their needs

  • Cars had to be registered one by one, creating friction for businesses with fleets
  • Multiple roles & approvals (accountants, managers, CEOs) weren’t supported in the retail app
  • Fines and permits were handled per car, making bulk payments inefficient
  • Businesses couldn’t see total monthly Auto Comfort spend
